About HeyCounseling:

Hey! Thanks for visiting my website! Finding a therapist can be intimidating, especially when you are feeling stressed or depressed. The first thing you should know about me is that I am laid-back, informal, and nonjudgmental; I just refuse to be the cold, clinical therapist-type! While compassionate and calm, I can also be energetic and fun during sessions.

I will work hard to establish a real connection with you and to create a truly safe and compassionate environment for new insight, growth and healing. I believe the most important part of therapy is the alliance between therapist and client; if we don’t have a strong connection, sessions aren’t as effective. Clients often share some of their most closely guarded thoughts and feelings. I will not be the kind of therapist who is unwilling to share thoughts and feelings too. It’s only fair!

I also work as a professional actor (Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, Theatre Latte Da, & The Ordway, etc), and this informs my counseling work. I think it makes me a good listener and a clear communicator. My acting work also helps me better connect with a wide variety of people, and it makes me more creative in my strategies in session. Finally, I really enjoy being a therapist and I genuinely like and enjoy my clients.

Managing mental health is tough, but worth it. And you don’t have to just manage alone. Given the right environment, you can thrive. I know because I’ve seen therapy work. I genuinely hope you reach out. You deserve to feel good! I look forward to meeting you!

When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and toddler, being active outdoors, and rigorously following our Minnesota sports franchises.

What are sessions like?

My sessions are generally very laid-back and informal. I spend time learning about you and your life. I try to provide a safe space for clients to explore their lives, thoughts, and emotions. I enjoy helping clients identify and maximize their strengths to overcome challenges. Building confidence and self-knowledge is key to feeling better and managing relationships. Generally, I will follow YOUR lead!

For those who prefer a more solution focused approach, I am also happy to provide gentle suggestions or new ways of looking at things. I also use a strategy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the psychology nerds out there!) to help people challenge unhelpful thought cycles. And I teach skills for managing anxiety, stress, and conflict.

Finally, I offer "Walking Counseling" sessions that incorporate light walking and/or stretching or "activity based sessions" (think golf, basketball, catch, etc) for those who like to move during the session to facilitate mental and physical health along with increased emotional expression.
